The last trailer load of hay backing into the barn The last trailer load of hay backing into the barn weeks later than planned. The last load always the biggest of the season to avoid a half load.
Ian sat tight through June despite the weather being perfect as he wanted to go later in July for the ground nesting birds and pollinators as well as allowing the wild flowers to seed but what followed was week after week of the diary being blanked out "just encase the weather was good" and an ever agitated husband consoled only by social media and the chat of farmers up and down the country experiencing the same issue.
Do these seem early this year? We have some blackb Do these seem early this year? We have some blackberry thickets that are ripening, only a few berries near the top of the farm so won't be picking in any quantity yet as our usual harvest spot is found at the bottom of the hill where the berries tend to fatten a little more.
Global Birdfair this weekend, excited to have a st Global Birdfair this weekend, excited to have a stage right next to us (turnstone) we can see and hear what's happening for once! Normally we go to great events and miss everything! Some exciting flavours in the freezer this weekend.
Beautiful Cherries! We really do it from beginning Beautiful Cherries! We really do it from beginning to end, every process its amazing to remember that we planted 3 cherry trees not long after moving onto Ganders Farm and have watched them grow. One of those trees got nibbled by a very hungry goat and is still recovering years later!

In those first few years we barely could see a cherry before we lost them to the blackbirds, but this year what a crop! So we picked those that we could reach, leaving the very tops for our feathered friends.

Now in the kitchen I've taken every stone out by hand ready to turn the sharp cherries into sauce.

Perhaps you were lucky to get a scoop of Cherry and Chocolate last year? It ran out quick as it was extremely popular! I'm very hopeful that this batch will be in the 'Seasonal Guest' flavour spot at this years @global_birdfair are you going?

As dusk falls the farm wakes up. The barn owl hasn As dusk falls the farm wakes up. The barn owl hasn't been as present on the farm the last two years, but the other night Ian caught a ghostly shadow leaving the owl box. The following evening wrapped up in blankets and armed with the telescope we sat some distance away and waited as the light fell and she took flight. This day last year we had two tawny owl chicks in the box, maybe just maybe its a pair of barn owl this time? We will have to wait for the Rockingham forest Bird ringing team to make their visit in the coming weeks.

Years of Harvest Mouse studies carried out in our Years of Harvest Mouse studies carried out in our meadows have born a real love for these delightful tiny itsy bitsy minuscule mice!
Each study has shown we an increasing number and we have plenty of evidence of nest sites and we have even spotted one or two wild ones!

This has been fanstaic for learing about their lifestyle, food they really go bonkers for, how they move through an area and what they are looking for in habitats.
